The closed beta testing of the next big update to City of Heroes, titled Issue 16: Power Spectrum, is due to begin soon.  Community Specialist Niviene announced on the official forums that Issue 16’s closed beta will begin shortly after the San Diego Comic-Con wraps up later this week.

Maemo 5 SDK Beta

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has released the second beta version of the Maemo 5 SDK, fixing many bugs reported by developers.
Combined with the recent improvements in the Fremantle Extras
repository, this release reportedly provide a solid basis to get
software ready for the Maemo 5 final release.

AROS Team Needs Poseidon Beta Testers

The port of the Amiga USB stack Poseidon, whose bounty was reached in May, to AROS is almost complete and today officially entered its beta-testing phase, which will last a week. If no show-stopping bugs appear during testing, Poseidon will be officially added to AROS and its sources will be opened under the terms of the AROS Public License, similar to the Mozilla one. The AROS team, however, needs volounteers to test the current version on a wider range of PC configurations.

WD TV Firmware PRE-Release BETA 1.02.10

WD TV HD the new media player by Western Digital plays almost any Movie
format and Music format. Also view all your digital pictures, all right
off your external hard drive or thumbdrive.

Prerelease 1.02.10 (includes all previously released updates)

Fixed Items:
Greek subtitles now render properly. Previously they rendered slowly, causing them to briefly flash on the screen.
Korean subtitles now render properly. Previously they disappeared during video playback.
Playlists play in the correct order. Previously they played files in alphabetical order.

Added feature:
Metadata
support for music improved over previous releases. For example,
browsing by genre is broken down into artists, then albums, then tracks.

Known issues:
A few text strings were not translated properly over different UI languages

Enhanced cover art, album art, and thumbnail support for media files and folders
Additional subtitle languages and decoding support
Improved media playback and navigation

PC, Mac, Linux and iPhone next month, but if you want an inside look
sooner, join the secret beta program. There are a few spots left, and
the qualifications are:

1) You like photos
2) You like Simplify Media
3) You can keep a secret (and are willing to keep the beta details confidential)

After launching our first beta of JIRA 4.0 at Atlassian Summit last month, have had already hundreds people download the beta and provide us tons of great feedback. This week, we released JIRA 4.0 Beta 2 which is the second major milestone release leading up to JIRA 4.0. This release contains over 250 fixes and improvements including activity streams, dashboard gadgets, advanced searching with JQL, and a sexy new header and project browser.

Zend Framework 1.9.0 Beta Now Available

This beta release showcases many of the new features that will be
available in the upcoming stable release:

  • Zend_Rest_Route, Zend_Rest_Controller, and
    Zend_Controller_Plugin_PutHandler, which aid in providing
    RESTful resources via the MVC layer.
  • Zend_Feed_Reader, which provides a common API to RSS and
    Atom feeds, as well as extensions to each format, caching, and a slew of
    other functionality.
  • Zend_Queue and Zend_Service_Amazon_Sqs, which
    provide the ability to use local and remote messaging and queue services for
    offloading asynchronous processes.
  • Zend_Db_Table updates to allow using
    Zend_Db_Table as a concrete class by passing it one or more
    table definitions via the constructor.
  • Zend_Test_PHPUnit_Db, which provides Zend_Db
    support for PHPUnit’s DBUnit support, allowing developers to do functional
    and integration testing against databases using data fixtures.
  • Annotation processing support for Zend_Pdf, as well as
    performance improvements.
  • Zend_Dojo custom build layer support.
  • Numerous Zend_Ldap improvements.
  • Zend_Log_Writer_Syslog, a Zend_Log writer for
    writing to your system log.
  • Several new view helpers, including
    Zend_View_Helper_BaseUrl.

Again, this is a beta release; do not use it in production
environments.

We hope to provide our initial release candidate early next week, so please
test now so we can take care of any lingering issues in the existing
functionality!
